Bob Dylan And Mark Knopfler b-sides and outtakes (Updated)

Actualizado: 17 nov 2022

Bob Dylan and Mark Knopfler started collaborating back in 1979. Since then, Knopfler appeared on three Dylan Records: Slow Train Coming (1979), Infidels (1983) and Down In The Groove (1988).

They met on stage in Australia in early 1986. Dylan joined Dire Straits and Knopfler joined Tom Petty and Dylan to play some classics from Bob´s catalogue.

Live in Australia, 1986

In 2011 and 2012, MK and His Band joined Bob Dylan on tour in Europe and USA, opening for him. Also, Knopfler joined Bob´s band to play on some of his songs at almost all locations.

The first two studio records, Slow Train Coming and Infidels, offer some B-sides and outtakes published during years in different compilations of rarities and singles. Down In The Groove has one track with Knopfler, reported to be developed during the Infidels sessions: Death Is Not The End. No B-side or outtakes with Knopfler from this album have been published up to date.

Apparently, in 1979 Bob saw Dire Straits in concert and wanted their lead guitar player to play on his next record. Also, Pick Withers was recruited from Dire Straits. By then, Dire Straits second album, Communiqué, was recorded but not published. So Knopfler got Dylan´s attention with only one released work.

Apart from the Slow Train Coming song list, one track was recorded and released as B-side: Trouble In Mind. It appeared on some singles taken from the album, which are widely available in the second hand market. In 2011, it got released on CD on the Pure Dylan compilation CD.

From this sessions we can also find Ye Shall Be Changed on The Bootleg Series Vol 1-3 (1991). Also published again in The Bootleg Series Vol 13. (2017). This track is the same in both compilations but the latest is remastered.

In the Bob Dylan release, The Bootleg Series Vol.13 we can find three outtakes related to Slow Train Coming, including an outtake from the former B-side: Gotta Serve Somebody, Ain't No Man Righteous, No Not One and Trouble In Mind. Note these tracks are not available on vinyl as the vinyl option for this boxset only covers live material.

Again in 1983 Bob Dylan asked Mark Knopfler to be in his next record now as producer together with him. The result of their collaboration was Infidels and this time, Alan Clark from Dire Straits was there aswell. From this album a lot of outtakes have surfaced during the years on bootleg recordings.

First of all, we have Angel Flying To Close To The Ground as B-Side. Released on some singles.

But the most interesting bunch of songs related to Infidels appeared in 1991 on the first Bootleg Series released as the Volume 1-3. Three CDs packed of Dylan rarities, including five outtakes from Infidels: Someone‘s Got A Hold Of My Heart, Tell Me, Lord Protect My Child, Foot Of Pride and Blind Willie McTell.

The first one later developed into an Empire Burlesque track called Tight Connection to My Heart (Has Anybody Seen My Love), released in 1985.

Also we have the aforementioned above Down In The Groove with the song Death Is Not The End.

Lastly, in 2021 another bootleg series including MK was released: Springtime In New York: The Bootleg Series Vol. 16 1980-1985. This package includes a lot of songs where MK plays on. All these tracks are from the Infidels sessions

To finish we will mention a couple of singles released in the summer of 2021 that includes some Knopfler guitar playing.

The first is 12" Vinyl EP named Jokerman / I And I (The Reggae Mix EP). It includes a couple of remixes of the title tracks.

And the second is a 7" Vinyl single that includes two takes of Blind Willie McTell. A Side's Take 1 is unreleased on the Bootleg Series Vol.16 box but does not include MK but Mick Taylor on guitar. Take 5 is the B-side, with MK, and already included in the boxset.

Anyway, they are nice items that can complete your Dylan / Knopfler collection.
